Classroom management



As you gain experience in the classroom, you will become more adept at responding to discipline problems if you remember these points

  • You can selectively ignore specific behaviours to avoid giving pupils an audience or ‘stage’ to work on
  • You cannot, however, ignore more serious behaviours that challenge safety or warrant a School Sanction
  • Try to separate the behaviour from the pupil
  • Never take inappropriate behaviour personally
  • Tackle one thing at a time
  • Make sure pupils know the effects of their behaviour on others
  • Consider reviewing your classroom seating plan, when necessary
  • Share your behavioural concerns with other colleagues
  • Where possible, get parents on board early in the process
